In today’s zoos, environmental enrichment is a term used to describe various techniques that animal keepers utilize to encourage natural behavior and to improve animals’ quality of life. Through research and development, trial and error, enrichment has evolved into an integrated effort to stimulate captive animals’ natural behavior. It is widely recognized that enrichment is an essential component of every animal husbandry program and is as critical to the overall health and welfare of captive animals as is good nutrition and medical care.
